Saiga 12 question

I am going to a gun show tomorrow mainly to check ammo prices however I am considering a Saiga 12 if they have one for a decent price.

My question is I would want this as a home defense shotgun but I have read this on wikipedia

The top round of ammunition left in loaded magazines will acquire an oval shape caused by the magazine spring squeezing the shells against a closed bolt. This will cause a failure to feed if shotgun shells are left in a loaded magazine inserted into a closed bolt shotgun for more than a few days.

Can anyone confirm or deny this? Or would I be better off for home defense getting a Mossberg Persuader or Cruiser?

This is true. I had to toss my rubber buckshot round cause of this. Use the manual bolt hold open and that should fix the problem. Get the saiga.

Loading the mags full and letting them sit wont hurt them, so at least leave a full few mags close by even if the one in your gun isnt full up.

So the S12 has a manual bolt open just not an automatic on last round?

They average about 599 nowadays but I have seen them as high as 899 on Guns America (selling like hotcakes).

They have 5 and 10 round mags that vary in range of 45-55 bucks a pop They also have a 12 rounder that should be out now that falls in the same bracket.

If you are still debating I would really put a move on it because if you see the AWB 2 legislation I think the number 4 rifle on the black list is Saiga.

Just something to keep in mind.

Re: Saiga 12 question

The gun show was pretty much a bust. No Saiga 12's the prices were sky high on most guns, AR's for 1300-1500 Yugo AK's for 1k, some decent prices on some handguns but no steals.

That's a Saiga 12 on GunBroker for 599 pretty good deal IMO.

Well I bit the bullet and bought one from my local dealer today:) Ended up being $625 with tax and all out the door. I was really torn between another tactical 870 or this, and ended up with this mainly because I might not be able to get one next year. 870's will always be around.

A Tactical at that most holds about what? seven rounds Max?

This one can hold 12+1 depending on where you buy it.

If these where not around I would stumping for 870's but thank goodness they are

Re: Saiga 12 question

I have a Saiga 12 and it's one fine shotgun! But it's not a home "Defense" gun, it's more of an "Offence" gun. Too big and bulky for tight quarters. For home "Defense" I prefer the Remington 870 with an 18" barrel and extended tube. Its easy to conceal in the folds of a bath robe (pajamas) and everyone know whats about to happen when they hear the Rack of a pump gun.

Re: Saiga 12 question

For me, an 870 would be more practical for home defense. The Saiga shouldn't be stored with shells in the mag, and I wouldn't trust it that way anyway. I have kids, therefore, I need something that can be accessed quickly and loaded fast. I'm quick to get two shells in an 870, just from training, but might not be with the Saiga. It's just a personal thing that I am more comfortable with.

Anyways, when it comes to home defense, I am not really going to use a shotgun anyways, I am going for the Glocks. I am far more confident with them anyways.

But anyways, I still own a Saiga 12 now! I just need to get out and shoot it!

Excellent points MM on the concealment factor with a 870.

Glad I got one too:ok:

Re: Saiga 12 question

Reminder. Order more magazine springs for the 870's.

I've been looking for a good (18" barrel) semi-auto shotgun now for a couple of weeks. They have flown off the shelves like the AR's and AK's. Don't want a Saiga because they require registration in my state.

Want a semi-auto in case there is a grand father clause in the next ban.
